Walking Along the Trolley Trail

March 9, 2016

SGT Branford Walk March 2016More than 30 walkers joined us on the Shoreline Greenway Trail (SGT) in Branford on March 5th for our First Saturday walk.

Leaving from the West Point Road ball field in Stony Creek, we walked on the Trolley Trail across the marsh, crossing the tracks of the Branford Steam Railroad and continuing along a finished section of the trail paralleling Tilcon Road. Returning along the same route, we took a side trail up to visit the Vedder monument. This is an inscribed plaque commemorating Branford resident Jennie Vedder, who donated the surrounding 27 acres to the Branford Land Trust. Vedder taught school in Branford and wrote poetry, and one of her poems appears on the plaque.

It was a clear, sunny day and the walkers enjoyed spectacular views over the marsh to the Thimble Islands and across the Sound to Long Island. Leo Cristofar led the 2.5 mile round-trip hike, assisted by Judy Miller, SGT Chairperson, and Chet Blomquist, Co-chair of the Branford section of the SGT.
