ALERT: Date of Public Hearing changed to November 1st, for Route One Trail Section

September 23, 2016

Trail Supporters – We urge the public and our 950 Guilford donor-supporters to attend a critical Town Public Hearing which will be held on  – a new date  – TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST at 7:30PM  (NOTE: the BOS just changed the date from October 12)  at the Community Center, for Guilford residents to voice their opinions about a Shoreline Greenway Trail section along Route One in Guilford, which is ready to be built.   The Guilford Board of Selectmen tabled their decision whether to move forward on this section of Trail until after this hearing.

This section of trail is a key part of our overall efforts to improve bike and pedestrian safety and access in Guilford. Because of deadlines on the state and federal money that will pay for the trail, if this project is delayed, the Town of Guilford is in danger of losing all the funding, and the town will lose an amazing asset.

The trail will be entirely on state property on the south side of Route 1, completely off-road, 7/10th mile, from the East River bridge to Boston Street and the route 146 bike route going west to town.  It will be a hard surface path with an attractive pink-hued chip-seal embedded with the same Stony Creek granite used in our popular Hammonasset trail section. It will allow walkers, bikers and wheelchair users to travel from eastern Guilford to downtown and beyond without getting on a very dangerous stretch of Route 1.

For four years, we have worked in partnership with the town, the State Department of Transportation, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to bring this project to completion, with public hearings and meetings.

The final design by our Town engineers for this trail section has been submitted to DOT, we have secured all the funding, landowner approval, and the Town is ready to build it…. we just need Board of Selectmen approval and Planning and Zoning approval of the Coastal Area Management site plan, which has already been approved by Guilford’s Inland Wetland Commission.

A safe, enjoyable biking and walking path connecting residents in the east side of town to our town center for pleasure, for shopping, for work, for healthy living will be an asset to our community for generations.

Please help fill the room to demonstrate your support to our selectmen.  Help us create a safe, bike- friendly and pedestrian-friendly Town.  Join us on TUESDAY NOVEMBER 1 at 7:30PM at the Guilford Community Center.
