Work Resumes at Hammonassett

About a half dozen volunteers armed with pruning implements and chain saws turned out Sunday, Jan. 13, to clear invasive brush and vines from the section of the trail that will run through unused portions of Hammonassett Beach State Park.

Such work is done in the winter months, when the absence of leaves (not to mention mosquitoes and ticks!) makes the work easier.

The Hammonassett section of the trail will run from the park’s entrance road to the intersection of Liberty Street and Route 1. On the way it will skirt both the park’s campground and Route1 before veering through a wooded area that affords great views of the marshes and a stream that empties into the sound. That property is on a state-owned peninsula that has been inaccessible to park visitors until now.

The clearing and route mapping is preliminary work. Actual construction of the trail will not begin until all of the necessary permits have been received from the state.

Check the Madison page on the Greenways web site for announcements about upcoming work parties.
