March 2008 Update
WELCOME TO ALL OUR NEW MEMBERS!
We are very pleased that so many new members have joined Shoreline Greenway Trail over the last year. Membership has grown 70% to almost 2,000 families and businesses.
You each are vital members of our all-volunteer organization. Only with members’ participation and support at whatever level, will we reach our goal. Please be sure to attend one of your Town Team’s monthly meetings to meet other supporters and find out what activity interests you the most.
STATE BOND COMMISSION APPROVES $665,000 FOR SGT
This exciting news in late January culminated many months of hard work, as SGT volunteers and our local State Representa-tives helped us secure the bond. These critical matching dollars will now enable us to access our federal grant of $2.65 million dollars and build the Trail.
We are fortunate that under Judy Gott’s leadership, the South Central Regional Council of Governments, SCRCOG, will serve as our fiscal agent to oversee the distribution of the Federal grant monies, and CT DEP will oversee the State grant, both working closely with SGT and our four towns’ officials.
The first step is to hire an engineering firm to layout the final Trail route and recommend which sections to build.
SGT INITIATES PUBLIC HIKE FIRST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH AT 10 AM
Each month we will hike different sections of our proposed trail – some under consideration, some approved, others being cleared, and a couple sections officially open!
The kick-off SGT Hike will be APRIL 5, SATURDAY at 10 AM at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, along a scenic section that Madison SGT volunteers have been clearing through woods and along marshlands with incredible views of the Sound.
Meet at the Campers parking lot: Turn right after the toll booths at park entrance. There will be no fee to enter the park.
MEET, GREET & WALK!
SIXTH ANNUAL MEETING & HIKE ON SATURDAY, MAY 3 AT 10:00 AM
All members, new and old, are invited to Willoughby Wallace Library in Stony Creek at 9:30 AM for informal greet-ings and refreshments, before the 6th Annual Meeting at 10 AM with election of directors.
At 10:45 am, we all will hike the proposed SGT Trail into Pine Orchard, by Young’s Pond and onto the Birch Road section open for use. Bring your family and friends. Leashed dogs welcome.
HOW MANY MILES HAVE WE BUILT?
We are making progress! If we add up all the unconnected yards of trail sections in the four towns that are approved, are in the process of being built, or are open for use, we have achieved a total of 5 linear miles of actual Shoreline Greenway Trail – 20% of our 25-mile trail goal!
This is amazing when we realize that just over six years ago the first organizing meeting was held with only a few folks who shared a vision to create a connected hiking and biking trail along the shoreline for all to enjoy. Given the complexities of such a huge, multi-town project, we are blazing away!
VOLUNTEERS JOIN WORK PARTIES ALONG THE TRAIL
This fall many volunteers have joined their SGT Town Team-mates to mark boundaries, blaze trails, clear brush, cut trees and dispose debris along different trail sections…great exercise and fun!
