Along the Trail - June 2008
FIRST SATURDAY MONTHLY PUBLIC HIKE, JUNE 7, 10 AM
On Connecticut Trails Day, all members, new and old, are invited to join veteran hiker Chet Blomquist and hear his fascinating local lore along the way.
We will meet at the parking lot of the Branford Day Care Center, 16 Birch Road, hike up behind the Pine Orchard Association building (old firehouse), past the Animal Hospital into Cosgrove/Tabor property, exiting onto South Montowese Street, on to salt marsh views at “Observation Point”, to Jenny Lind Park. Cars will transport people back to the Branford Day Care Center. Bring your family and friends. Leashed dogs welcome.
CHANGES FOR VOLUNTEER BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Every month our dedicated Board members meet to discuss the myriad of complex details and make decisions essential to our progress with the Trail.
At the Annual Meeting May 1, four new members were elected to our 28-person Board: Sheila Muller, Madison, walker, cyclist and gardener; Michael Gambardella, East Haven, Boy Scout leader, hiker and engineer; Bobbi Cohen, Guilford, avid cyclist and professional fund-raiser; and Bill Richardson, East Haven, avid mountain biker and sales manager.
Long-time Board members whose terms expired are Scott Tabar, Guilford; Louise Beecher, Madison; Ellen McGuire and Mary Frazeur, East Haven.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: A RETIRED TRAIL BUILDER
After retiring to Madison in 2006, Perry Rianhard joined the Madison SGT Team. He instantly became Madison’s irrepressible trailmaster. Perry is one of those people who can do anything, fix anything, and enjoys extremely long, hard work. He marshaled a crew of over 75 volunteers who have hacked their way through a mile of jungle in an undeveloped part of Hammonasset Beach State Park.
Undaunted by invasive vines, poison ivy, and briar bushes, they have cut the path through woods and overlooking salt marshes that will offer some of the most beautiful views along the 25-mile Shoreline GreenwayTrail. Parts of the path are already suitable for rough hiking. Perry is determined to complete this section within one to two years.
