Along the Trail This Month - July 2008
1st Saturday Monthly Walk
July 5, 10 A.M. in East Haven
Join us for a family-friendly walk on two cleared sections of the Shoreline Greenway Trail. The sections are approximately 2000 feet long, in a peaceful, natural setting, wooded and picturesque, and will afford us an view of tidal wetlands. Meet at D.C. Moore School, 82 Elliot Street, East Haven. Free and open to the public. For more information, call Barbara Brow at 469-9127.
New Project: Photo Mapping of the Trail
We plan to photograph the entire length of the proposed Trail to document varying conditions and difficult aspects that will be very helpful to the preliminary engineering study.
Facilitated by Larry Dowler, Guilford Town Team Chair, the just-formed four-town Mapping Team will be led by Guilford member Ted Braun. Scott Tabar and Sam Gerritz of Guilford are developing a GPS-based system for recording the information.
With the help of volunteer photographers, such as Pat Anderson from the Madison Town Team who has taken many scenic photos of the Trail, we will also acquire a photo inventory useful for many purposes. GPS users and photographers, please contact Ted Braun at
tedbraun135@gmail.com or 453-5688 to volunteer.
Trail Explores Wetlands Restoration Project
Eight Trail volunteers recently attended an information session held by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to learn how to eliminate invasive phragmites and restore wetlands. This project will enhance our environment by returning wetlands to their natural, healthy state with native species.
Paul Capotosto, DEP wetlands restoration biologist, explained the life cycle of the plant and the best ways to eliminate it in the fall season. After touring the state wetlands facility in Madison, they visited sites where Paul’s program has restored wetlands in Madison.
SGT Trail Development chair Jack Wood is excited about the prospect of Shoreline Greenway Trail participating in this project, joining many land trusts and environmental groups to help restore our native wetlands. We are currently putting together a team to lead the effort. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Ginny Raff, Madison Town Team Chair at 318-9649 or vraff@sbcglobal.com.
Need Volunteers for Telephone Crew
We are seeking volunteers to help obtain SGT members’ email addresses in order to send this monthly news-page efficiently & inexpensively. Contact Pam Bisbee-Simonds at 453-2271 or pbsbds@snet.net to help.

In Memoriam
Ellen McGuire, an SGT Resident Director from East Haven, loved nature and the outdoors, especially walking and hiking. She was also a Board member of the Appalachian Trail. Ellen was one of the first residents to join our East Haven SGT Town Team in 2002.
Always willing to help, as Town Team secretary, Ellen oversaw our membership effort. Recently, even though ill, Ellen created and produced flyers and tickets for an SGT fundraiser, a Wine Tasting for the Trail.
To establish a trail was Ellen’s top priority and her favorite project. We are grateful for the many contributions that her friends have sent honoring Ellen.
