SUMMARY:New Haven SEAL-SLEUTHING Expedition!! New Haven Bioregional Group
DESCRIPTION:Bioregional Seal Sleuthing Expedition\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1401337311273221?\nHow did “Chappy” New Haven’s now-famous wayward seal get to Chapel Street from New Haven harbor?\nAnd why did it undertake such a hazardous journey?\nJoin us for a special bioregional investigation led by master seal sleuth Chris Ozyck. We will trace the path taken by the seal from the harbor\, under the highway\, where it crossed East Street and passed through a parking lot up to Chapel (depending on weather\, we may even be able to see some of the original seal tracks). We will discuss some of the various theories about why the young seal ventured so far from the water.\nMeanwhile Aaron Goode from the Bioregional Group will discuss the history of New Haven’s “Dragon Point\,” the historic community at the mouth of the Quinnipiac River that was named after a community of large harbor seals living in New Haven’s rich estuaries; current water quality issues affecting marine life in the harbor; and the ongoing development of a Shoreline Greenway Trail in New Haven that will allow residents to experience the waterfront and its wildlife in new and exciting ways.\nHope you can join us for this seal sleuthing adventure!\nMeet at the Canal Boathouse\nhttps://facebook.com/CanalDock \nFor more info\, contact us at (203) 350-3795.\nnewhavenbioregionalgroup.org

SUMMARY:* Walk the Future Route of the Shoreline Greenway Trail in New Haven [Part I] * - April 20th
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, April 20\, 9:30am – 12:30pm\nMeet at Lighthouse Point Park\, 2 Lighthouse Road\, New Haven\n(Next to the Pollinator Garden – Use the Main Entrance Rd.)\n\n\n\nOn this Earth Day excursion\, join local experts and advocates for a walking ‘preview’ of the southern section of the future Shoreline Greenway Trail extension into New Haven. We will talk about the long history of the ‘harborside trail’ concept for New Haven\, examine some ways the proposed plan could be tweaked to provide better access to scenic resources and a better user experience\, and look at some possible spur-trail connections from the proposed Shoreline Greenway Trail route to Lighthouse Point Park. The walk will be led by longtime advocate of a harborside trail\, Chris Ozyck\, Aaron Goode of the Bioregional Group and representatives from the Shoreline Greenway Trail organization.  \n \nThe walk will be a loop\, returning to Lighthouse around 12:30pm\, with a walking distance that is a little over 4 miles total\, mostly on paved and flat terrain with one hill (and some stairs). Please be prepared to walk at a moderate pace. \n \nLater this year there will be a “Part II” exploring the northern portion of the proposed Shoreline Greenway Trail route in New Haven (from Fort Hale Park to Long Wharf). Details TBA. \n \nOur meeting place will be next to the pollinator garden in Lighthouse Point Park (roughly the midpoint of the parking area). Use the main entrance road and you will see signs for the walk.\n \nQuestions? Contact us!\n\n~RSVP at bit.ly/SGTNewHaven~\n\n \nThe City of New Haven has received more than $9 million since December 2022 to complete a new extension into New Haven of the Shoreline Greenway Trail (SGT) which\, when completed\, will be a contiguous multi-use trail extending from New Haven to Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison.  \n \nIn March 2024 the City released its proposed plan for the Shoreline Greenway Trail expansion. The new segment will connect the terminus of the future Shoreline Greenway Trail route in East Haven with the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail and East Coast Greenway in the Long Wharf area\, fulfilling a 25-year dream of trail advocates for an interconnected network of greenways and cycling systems across Greater New Haven. \n \nExcitement is building for this unique recreational and economic development resource that will link existing parks and greenways and provide improved access to some of the most scenic and historic places on the east side of New Haven harbor\, including the remains of an 18th-19th century military fort\, the Pardee Seawall promenade\, and Forbes Bluff\, truly one of the most spectacular spots on the entire Connecticut shoreline.  \n \nYou may have seen some of the recent publicity about the plans for Shoreline Greenway Trail expansion:\n \n“Move Over\, Appalachian Trail”\nhttps://www.newhavenindependent.org/article/paving_the_greenway_from_ma_to_guilford_alt_tell_the_appalachian_trail_to_move_over\n \nhttps://www.wfsb.com/2024/04/10/trail-project-will-connect-new-haven-neighborhoods-surrounding-communities/\n \nhttps://www.nhregister.com/news/article/new-haven-farmington-canal-trail-shoreline-19387992.php\n
