New Haven 1st Sat Walk 2025 Jan 4th

Saturday, January 4th was cold but a great start to the “1st Saturday Walk & Roll” series that Shoreline Greenway Trail hosts every ‘1st Saturday’ along a selected section of the trail route from New Haven to Madison.

This marked the inaugural event for New Haven as plans are being made to formally include the New Haven team into Shoreline Greenway Trails organization.

Sponsored by Shoreline Greenway Trail and in partnership with Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, New Haven Bioregional Group and others, over 80 people met at the Canel Street Boathouse, at the confluence of multiple Trail systems, along the beautiful New Haven Shoreline. The walk of approximately 5 miles had wonderful vistas and a lot of great information was shared.

Along the walk, and stopping at strategic points, the group heard from many local leaders and experts including the City of New Haven Historian, Michael Morand; representing the Marine and Environmental Sciences Program at the University of New Haven, COASTS and the Canal Street Boathous, Jean-Paul Simjouw; the New Haven Coalition for Active Transportation; Bradley Street Bike Co-Op; East Coast Greenway members; cultural heritage groups; COG representatives; senior DEEP employees environmental justice activists; Urban Resources Initiative; high school teachers; union leaders among others.

It was a broad cross-section of the Greater New Haven community and a glimpse of a coalition of groups supporting and working together to bring safe, accessible transportation alternatives to the community and region.
