Shoreline Greenway Trail has lost one of its staunchest supporters with the death of Chet Blomquist on November 27. Chet was a founding member on Shoreline Greenway Trail Board of Directors and the first chair of the Branford team. His enthusiasm for the project knew no bounds; he would traipse tirelessly through woodlands trying to find a path., — especially on the Tabor property, whose trail today is a testimony to the work of early volunteers he led. Thus it was especially appropriate that the pond on the property officially became “Chet’s Pond: as part of a Chet Blomquist Day celebration in 2010 that honored his many contributions to the town of Branford. Thus it was especially appropriate that the pond on the property officially became “Chet’s Pond: as part of a Chet’s Day celebration in 2010 that honored his many contributions to the town of Branford.
The town of Branford is a better place because of Chet. Not only was he the first chair of the Branford Shoreline Greenway Trail team; he as also the force force behind the Branford Trail and theBranford ‘Walkers, a group he founded that is still active today. He was instrumental in creating the Branford River Gateway, and for years he made sure that that area was well maintained. Those of us who were fortunate enough to walk the Branford Trail with him when he led the group will remember that he always carried pruners with him for clipping overgrowth as he walked and a plastic bag for picking up trash. . For years we were greeted with his sign, “Happy Trails,”” as we entered the Tabor trail. That phrase sums up his attitude toward life.
The family has suggested that donations may be made in his honor to Shoreline Greenway Trail through its website.
